September in the Charente: enjoy France after the summer crowds ☀️

Many holidaymakers automatically think of July and August when planning a trip to France. But we actually think September is one of the loveliest months to visit the Charente.

The busy summer season is over, the days can still be wonderfully pleasant, and life slows down a little. No crowded tourist attractions – just time to enjoy France at your own pace.

1. Leave the high-season crowds behind

July and August are the main holiday months in France. By September, things become much quieter again.

You notice it when visiting a village, stopping for lunch or spending a day exploring the area. There is simply more time and space to enjoy your surroundings.

And that suits this part of France perfectly. The Charente isn't a mass-tourism destination. People come here for peace, space, nature and a taste of real French life.

2. A lovely time to get out and explore

Of course, we can't guarantee summer weather in September – unfortunately, even we can't arrange that 😉 – but it is often a wonderful time to be outdoors.

While midsummer can sometimes be very hot, September temperatures are generally more comfortable for walking, cycling and sightseeing.

3. Discover the area at a relaxed pace

There are plenty of interesting places to visit from our gîtes.

Spend some time in Confolens, explore Rochechouart and its impressive château, or take a day trip to Limoges.

Oradour-sur-Glane is also within easy reach. It is an incredibly moving place and offers an important insight into the history of this region.

And one of the advantages of September? You can explore without the peak-season crowds.

4. Watch the countryside slowly change 🍂

We live surrounded by beautiful green countryside, and September is when you start to notice the first subtle changes in nature.

Summer hasn't quite disappeared, but the landscape slowly begins its transition towards autumn.

It's a beautiful time of year for walking, cycling or simply taking your camera and exploring.

5. You don't have to do something every day

Perhaps this is one of the things we love most about September.

A holiday doesn't need to be filled with activities every single day.

Read a book, enjoy a leisurely breakfast, go for a walk, stop somewhere for lunch and then return to your gîte.

No rushing and no schedule to follow.

Sometimes doing very little is exactly what a holiday should be about.

And this area is perfect for that.

6. Perfect for a holiday for two

During the summer we welcome many families with children. In September, the atmosphere changes.

It's a particularly lovely time for couples looking to spend a few days or a week together in France.

You'll have your own private gîte and plenty of space to relax, while we live on site and are always happy to help if you'd like tips or information about the area.

7. And you might just get lucky… ☀️

September is still September. One day may be beautifully warm and sunny, while another reminds you that autumn is approaching.

But that's part of the charm of late summer.

Wake up surrounded by the peaceful French countryside, spend the day exploring and return to your own gîte at the end of the day.

For us, that's September in the Charente.
